Welcome to
ENGLISH MOUNTAIN LABRADORS
Dogs have always been a focal point in our lives. We can't remember a day where we weren't graced with the presence of a four legged companion. We have had the joy and pleasure of raising several different breeds, to include Rottweillers, Doberman Pinchers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Jack Russell Terriers, Bichon Frise', and West Highland Terriers. Once we were introduced to the English Labrador Retriever, we were hooked. In as much as we truly love and appreciate all dogs, regardless of breed, the English Labrador Retriever quickly became a family favorite. Our Labradors, along with all our other pets, are members of our family, and we love them all deeply.
Our love for animals has never wavered. We always knew that working with animals was in our future, and that passion has remained. We adopted sick dogs through area shelters that were scheduled to be euthanized. In Florida, 'Save a Pet' Foundation would cover the expenses to treat the animals, and we housed them, nursing them back to health to eventually get adopted to a 'forever home.' We are huge advocates for the under dog, the weak, because we know with love, there is strength and healing. On the flip side of the coin, we firmly believe that dogs should conform to a particular standard set for that breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), and responsible breeders must strive for conformation. If a pet does not meet the highest criteria, we endorse area spay and neuter programs and support our area shelter.
The English Mountains are in the Great Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee. After retiring from a career in Law Enforcement in Palm Beach County, Florida, and moving to Tennessee, we opened up a small business in the rural community of Cosby, located outside of Gatlinburg. 'Creature Comfort', the Bed, Breakfast, and Boutique for you Pet was formed in May of 2006. There, we specialized in pet boarding, dog grooming, canine obedience, and pet supplies (www.smokymountainboarding.com).
Through the course of working with many different breeds, we quickly gained so much insight about almost every breed out there. We learned about the positives and negative traits certain breeds carry, and discovered how to be assertive and take the 'alpha' role even with the mightiest of breeds yet tender and earning trust from the scared ones. This didn't come over night, and it took a great deal of patience. But our devotion for the business and it's clients, and the love they give back, makes our job priceless. We have been recognized ten years in a row as the 'Best Pet Boarder', and 'Best Pet Supplies' business in the area.
Through the course of our business, we also determined which breed of dog we were the most fond of. We wanted a dog in our family that had a fabulous temperament, that was loving, loyal, sturdy in stature, athletic, intelligent, and good looking. We steered towards larger breeds which could possibly provide protection, yet was good with children, one that required little grooming, and one that had the personality to make a great companion. Though several breeds could be described in that manner, one breed in particular, stood out. It was the English Labrador Retriever.
The English Lab, unlike the American Lab, is shorter, stouter, bigger boned, broader chested, cleaner lines, shorter 'otter' tails, shorter snouts, smoother coats and larger, blockier heads. They can be as athletic as the American Lab, and both LOVE water equally , but the English Lab, in our experience, tends to be not as high spirited. They make a phenomenal family pet. We couldn't decide which coat coloring we liked best, so we have introduced all three colors to our family; ie, a classic black labrador, a rich chocolate labrador, and a creamy yellow labrador. Please note, we DO NOT breed or endorse any other color of Labrador Retriever. Our goal is to maintain the integrity of this wonderful breed.

In all our years of owning and working with dogs, we have never had a pet like the English Labrador Retriever. Not only are they a beautiful breed, it is our experience that these labs are highly intelligent, and eager to please. Our labs have all been crate trained since pups, and they all were nearly 100% house broken by 8 weeks. Giving them a secure environment, and tons of love, we observed that these pups sleep through the night by the 7th week, and don't bark or whimper all night. Our pups have also been acquainted at an early age to almost every noise, texture, domesticated animal, toy, surface, activity, climate, and plenty of different people which has made them all remarkably sound and self assured. Our pack has also been introduced to water, ear cleanings, and nail trimming on a regular basis to eliminate the fear of these issues. Our pups are familiar with leash training at an early age and love regular walks. Their eagerness to learn is shown with an introduction to basic obedience between 4 to 6 months. We recommend and utilize 'praise' oriented training. We are 'hands on' with our family members, and this has created the best of mans best friend, two-fold! We just can't say enough about the English Labrador Retriever.
